Game 6: Taking Care of Grizzness
Holy hell that was fun! Game 6 was about one thing and one thing only: FINISHING. And that’s exactly what the Grizzlies did. After a VERY physical and loud game 6 in the Grindhouse, the Grizzlies win their 4th straight game by 10+ points and advance to their 2nd Western Conference semi-finals in 3 years by a score of 118-105. The steps we have made are absolutely incredible and to make few more steps over those damn Floppers? WOOOOO!
I apologize for that, I’m still very emotional today.
From the tip you had the sense this game was going to get chippy and that it did. We won’t go deep into that because 1) you know what happened and 2) WE DON’T BLUFF. Beating the Floppers in game 6 wasn’t going to be easy and they proved that in the first half. Both teams were going back and forth, and although the Grizz we’re leading almost all of the 1st half, their largest lead was 8 points and it didn’t last very long, mainly because Matt Barnes completely forgot how to miss a shot. With 2:17 remaining in the first half the score was tied at 51 all after a jumper from Caron Butler. Immediately after Mr. Energy Quincy Pondexter hit a big 3 and the Grizz would close the quarter on a 7-2 run, giving them a 58-53 advantage going into halftime.
The second half is where the Grizz really started flexing their muscles (see: Tony Allen). The Grizzlies outscored the Floppers 34-26 in the 3rd quarter and that’s all they would need to hold on. With 8:47 to go in the game the Grizzles hit 100 points on the scoreboard (WTF?!?) off a Mike Conley 3 assisted from the Grindfather himself. Even with a 13 point lead with almost half of the 4th played, the Floppers refused to go away, cutting the lead to 6 with 4:13 to go in the game. I won’t mention what was in the back of my mind, but you know what I’m referring to. After the timeout, the Grizzlies regrouped and once again flexed their muscles, scoring on 3 consecutive possessions to extend the lead back to 12 and that was all she wrote. Once the game was out of hand, the butthurtness really came out of Flop City. Chris Paul was ejected after a bush league hockey check on BIG SPAIN after a made free-throw. Moments later ZBO was ejected in what may have been the greatest ejection exit I’ve ever seen. ZBO threw his headband into the stands, beat his chest, had something to say to LA’s bench, and happily skipped through the tunnel and to the locker room. Revenge sure is sweet.
Here are some numbers from last night that need to be pointed out and some I found interesting:
STAT LINE OF THE NIGHT
Tony Allen- 19 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 steals, 0 TO's
This guy just has "IT". A new is in order for the Grindfather. He was born to play for Memphis.
Jerry Bayless and Quincy Pondexter combined for 28 of the 32 bench points scored for the Grizzlies
The Grizz got to the charity stripe FORTY-SEVEN (47) times. NOT A TYPO.
I'm not a huge fan of the +/- stat like some are, but the Grizz starters we're a combined +73 compared to the Floppers starters combining for -68
While nothing really jumps out on the stat sheet, he finished with 23 points (8-12 from the field and 7-8 FT's), 5 rebounds, and 4 assists. This guy is the heart of this team, and along with Tony, was born to play for Memphis. Have you heard he doesn't bluff?
Now that we have sent the Floppers back to LA, they will get to watch the rest of the playoffs from their couch. This is a really special time to be a Grizz fan. Especially those of us who endured 20 win seasons and embarrassment. In my opinion, this is the most satisfying win as a Grizzlies fan and I still have an incredible high from last night. Enjoy it, but come tomorrow the task at hand is OKC. GRIND FORTH.
